How CampusLife Helped Callie Build Confidence and Practical Marketing Skills

For many international students, one of the biggest challenges after arriving in Australia is finding good opportunities to gain local and professional experience.

As an international student pursuing Master of Business majoring in Marketing and Information Systems, Chuoxin (Callie) Cai was looking for an opportunity to gain local Australian experience while developing her professional communication and marketing skills. Like many students, she found that internships often required previous experience or schedules that were difficult to balance alongside university commitments.

While searching for opportunities across Australia, Callie came across the CampusLife internship program. After reading more about the program and the opportunity to work directly with businesses, she felt it aligned perfectly with what she was looking for.

"It felt like a really good starting point for me, especially as an international student who wanted to gain practical experience in a real business environment."

It was the beginning of an experience that would challenge her, strengthen her confidence, and provide valuable exposure to real-world marketing.

Building Experience Through Real Client Work

During her internship, Callie was matched with Mark, an author, speaker, and coach.

Her role focused on supporting the growth of Mark's personal brand and helping increase the visibility of his content across different platforms. The work involved a variety of marketing activities, giving her exposure to both strategic thinking and practical execution.

Throughout the internship, she worked on market research, competitor analysis, audience research, content strategy, and content repurposing. One of her key responsibilities involved researching the speaking and coaching market across Brisbane and Australia. By analysing competitors and exploring how other professionals positioned their personal brands, she helped identify opportunities for Mark to strengthen his positioning and differentiate himself within the market.

She also conducted B2B audience research using LinkedIn to identify organisations and decision-makers who aligned with Mark's services. This research provided valuable insights that helped identify target audiences, refine positioning, and uncover potential business opportunities.

As the internship progressed, Callie became increasingly involved in content repurposing. This involved transforming long-form content such as presentations and videos into formats suitable for different digital channels, allowing content to reach wider audiences across multiple platforms.

What began as research and strategy work gradually expanded into content execution, giving her experience across multiple areas of marketing and helping her understand how strategic insights translate into practical marketing activities.

Growing Confidence Through Client Communication

Beyond the marketing skills, the internship also helped Callie in improving her confidence and communication skills.

As a non-native English speaker, Callie initially found the idea of communicating directly with a client intimidating. Presenting research findings and recommendations to a business owner felt very different from delivering university assignments. Unlike classroom assessments, the work she produced had the potential to influence real business decisions. That responsibility challenged her to develop new levels of confidence and professionalism.

To overcome this challenge, she prepared thoroughly before every meeting, organised her research carefully, and ensured she fully understood the work she was presenting. Over time, those conversations became easier, and her confidence continued to grow.

"This experience taught me that communication is not just about speaking perfect English. It is more about being prepared, clear and willing to engage."

The experience not only strengthened her communication skills but also helped her become more comfortable sharing ideas, recommendations, and insights within a professional environment.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Working closely with Mark gave Callie valuable insights into both marketing and professional life.

Beyond providing feedback on her work, Mark encouraged her to share her ideas and think more strategically about the recommendations she was making. Through these conversations, she gained practical knowledge that is not always covered at university, including content planning, professional presentation skills, and personal branding. Mark regularly shared advice that extended beyond marketing, offering career and professional insights that helped shape her thinking about the future.

The internship also changed the way she viewed marketing itself.

At university, frameworks and theories provide a valuable foundation. However, working with a real client showed her that successful marketing requires flexibility. Rather than applying a standard model, she learned the importance of understanding a client's unique strengths, audience, and business goals before making recommendations.

It also reinforced that the value of marketing research is not simply collecting information, but turning insights into actions that support business decisions. This shift in perspective helped her connect the theories she learned at university with the realities of helping businesses achieve their goals.

More Than Just A Marketing Internship

Since completing the internship, Callie feels significantly more confident in professional environments. The experience strengthened her communication skills, improved her ability to present ideas and research, and helped her connect university concepts with real-world situations.

She now approaches both her studies and future career opportunities with greater confidence, knowing she has already contributed to real projects and collaborated directly with business owners.

Looking back, one of the biggest lessons she took away from the experience was the importance of staying curious, asking questions, and being willing to step outside her comfort zone. Through working with experienced professionals and contributing to real business projects, she discovered that growth often comes from embracing opportunities before feeling completely ready.

"Don't worry too much about being perfect. Focus on learning, contributing and stepping outside your comfort zone."

For Callie, the internship was more than an opportunity to gain marketing experience. It was a chance to develop practical skills, build confidence, and gain first-hand insight into what it means to work in a professional environment.

At its core, that is what CampusLife is all about: helping students gain real-world experience, develop practical skills, build confidence, and create meaningful impact for businesses along the way.
