Julia's Internship Story

Written by Julia Comelli

That overwhelming feeling as a student not knowing what the future holds or how to even take the next steps into your career.

That feeling was solved by the team that work here at CampusLife.

During my business degree at RMIT, it was my responsibility to find an internship to complete my course. It felt like getting thrown into the deep end of a pool without even knowing how to swim yet. There is so much unknown and processes and systems that you are completely unfamiliar with. I even thought to myself, even if I did somehow secure an internship what do people in the professional field even do on a day to day and how do they know what to do.

All these worries were washed away when I was introduced to the team at Social Star and CampusLife. After my interview with the brilliant Andrew Ford, I was offered a position as a marketing Intern, which gave me a blanket of reassurance that I was able to finish my degree with some experience under my belt.

Through a thorough onboarding sequence before arrival, I was already feeling a lot more prepared to tackle the new world of professional work that I had been waiting for. Within my first week, I was already welcomed and supported with all the resources and communication channels I needed to get my learning journey started. The training I received allowed me to work independently with the resources I was provided to learn applications and skills on my own.

I was also provided the best resource a girl could ask for when starting an internship at a new and unfamiliar place. A work buddy (shout out Tiana!). My work buddy was and still is my biggest support system when navigating the ropes of a marketing role, where she would answer all my questions (even the extremely dumb ones), provide me with training on platforms or processes I was unfamiliar with and overall be a good friend to me when I'm feeling overwhelmed. It was nice going in knowing I had someone I could lean on for support, as any new intern would have a million questions when they begin.

When thinking back on the last 4 months working for this team, I have learnt an abundance of new skills. Even just down to how to send professional emails, how to organise tasks on Google calendar and how to prioritise tasks effectively. I also found that a lot of the tasks I do on the day to day relate to what I have been learning at RMIT. With this opportunity I have been able to create and schedule written and visual content for clients, develop a marketing plan, attend weekly and monthly meetings (internal and external), conduct market research and complete client interviews.

I couldn’t have asked for a better way to gain industry experience. I haven’t even graduated uni yet and I already feel like I have so many skills and experiences under my belt to prepare for what comes in the future. The team at Social Star and CampusLife have truly made this experience so supportive and thorough, I feel like I am ready to tackle the world.

If you are currently in that awkward phase of not knowing what comes next in your journey to industry life, this is your sign. Apply for CampusLife and start now!
