What is BYOB and why is it valuable?

By Momina

Ever wondered what it’s actually like to work with real clients as a marketing student?

Not just hypotheticals or case studies, but rolling up your sleeves and helping a real business grow. That’s exactly what the CampusLife x BYOB internship experience offers. If you're curious about how your skills can make a real-world impact before you even graduate, you're in the right place.

Let me give you an inside look into what it’s like behind the scenes and why you might want to be part of something pretty special.

Who am I in all of this?

Hey! I’m Momina, the Brand and Marketing Coordinator here at Social Star and BYOB. I’ve been with the team for nearly a year now, and honestly, no two days are ever the same. My role is all about helping bring this program to life, from running ad campaigns and organising community events, to crafting newsletters, supporting business owners, and helping structure how we grow the BYOB brand.

On any given day, you might find me building content plans, answering questions from our community, testing out new marketing strategies, or jumping on a call with a small business owner who just needs some guidance. I get to be part of everything, the strategy, the execution, and most importantly, the connection.

Being in this role means I see firsthand the real transformation that happens when someone gets the support they need to move their business forward and now, you’ll get to be a part of that too.

My experience with BYOB clients

Working with BYOB clients has been one of the most interesting parts of my job. Every founder comes in with a different personality, a different business idea, and their own set of challenges and honestly, that’s what makes it exciting.

Some clients are super confident and driven, but just don’t know how to communicate their brand. Others are full of amazing ideas but need help turning them into actual content and strategy. You’ll meet clients who are tech consultants, creatives, medical professionals, small business founders, startup owners, literally everyone and anyone. They’re specialists in what they do, but they need help marketing how they do it.

This is where you come in. As a CampusLife intern, you’ll get paired with one of these founders. You’ll work closely with them, helping with real marketing tasks, whether that’s managing social media, building a website, writing captions, or launching a campaign. It’s hands-on, collaborative, and incredibly rewarding because your ideas are actually used to move a business forward.

What I love most is that BYOB clients want to learn from you. They’re not here to delegate and disappear, they genuinely value the fresh perspective students bring, and they’ll treat you as part of the team. You’ll learn just as much from them as they will from you.

How does this all connect to CampusLife?

This is where it gets exciting. BYOB and CampusLife were built to work together and as a student, that means you get the best of both worlds.

Through CampusLife, you’ll be matched with a real business from the BYOB community. You’ll become part of our weekly calls, hear real client challenges, and gain exposure to how small businesses actually operate, not in theory, but in real time. You'll learn how to communicate with clients, solve real problems, and build the confidence that only comes from doing the work.

But more than that, you’ll become part of the magic. The BYOB community is unlike anything else. It’s warm, welcoming, collaborative, and supportive. Everyone is building something meaningful, and now, you get to help them do that. You’ll network with business owners, other interns, and our own team and you’ll walk away with experience, confidence, and connections that genuinely matter.

Oh and did I mention we don’t charge you? Unlike other programs where interns pay to get experience, CampusLife is 100% free and built to support you. You’ll walk away with work on your resume, insights from real marketing projects, and a stronger sense of where you want to go next.

So, should you apply?

Absolutely. If you’re ready to step out of the classroom and into the real world, this is your chance. You don’t need tons of experience, you just need an open mind, a willingness to try, and a few hours a week to invest in your future.

Trust me, the confidence you gain from this experience is something no textbook can teach you. I’ve seen students grow into amazing marketers through this journey and I can’t wait to see what you bring to the table too.

Spots are limited, so if you’re even thinking about applying… do it. You might just surprise yourself.
